NEW DELHI - An American man allegedly tried to commit suicide Thursday by jumping from the departure ramp at the Indira Gandhi International airport here but he was persuaded to change his mind, police said.

Redmon Tyrone, 37, attempted to kill himself at the newly built Terminal 3, a senior officer said.

Tyrone was to fly to the US via London with his friend Nilesh Patel Wednesday. But he was not allowed to board the aircraft as he reached the airport late.

The man spent Wednesday night at the airport. Frustrated, he tried to commit suicide Thursday, Deputy Commissioner of Police R.A. Sanjeev told IANS.

For two long hours, paramilitary, police and fire brigade personnel kept talking to him to ensure that he did not kill himself.

Tyrone and Patel flew to New Delhi Feb 2. They went to Baroda and returned to the capital Tuesday.
