Two held for killing 70-year-old woman

NEW DELHI - Two men who wanted to get rich quick have been arrested here for strangling a 70-year-old unmarried woman and robbing her house of cash and jewellery, police said Wednesday.

The accused were identified as Mohammad Ibrahim, 21, and Aftab Ahmad, 30. Both hail from Bihar and lived in Shastri Park here.

They killed Vimla Sharma and robbed her house in Lajpat Nagar in south Delhi and escaped with cash totalling Rs.223,400 and jewellery Feb 2, Additional Commissioner of Police Virender Singh Chahal said.

The deceased lived with her sister Sarla Sharma in Bhogal, also in south Delhi. She had another house in Lajpat Nagar which she often visited.

Investigation showed the dead woman was last seen with Ibrahim, a part-time domestic help with a relative of Sharma.

Ibrahim initially pleaded ignorance about the murder. On Wednesday, however, he admitted killing Sharma with his accomplice Aftab Ahmad, who was arrested in Bihar.

We have recovered Rs.223,400 and jewellery from them. Both men belong to poor families and committed the crime to make quick money, said the officer.
