KARNAL - At least seven prisoners escaped from a police van which had brought them to a district court complex here Thursday afternoon, police said.

The prisoners were part of a group of 10 prisoners brought from Kurukshetra town, 40 km from here, for a court hearing in a dacoity case.

While being taken back, the prisoners had got into the police van when one of the policemen accompanying them went back into the court complex to get something.

Taking advantage of the delay in their departure, seven prisoners escaped. Three other prisoners remained inside the van and are in police custody, a Haryana police official said here.

Senior police officials rushed to the spot and police teams were formed and dispatched to find the prisoners who escaped.

Raids are being conducted at various places and an alert has been issued in Karnal district. We will find the prisoners soon, the police official added.

Karnal is about 130 km from Chandigarh.
