RAMABAI NAGAR - Three policemen in this Uttar Pradesh district have been suspended following the suicide of a student after police beat him up after detaining him on charges of theft, officials said Monday.

The 14-year-old class 10 student hanged himself from a ceiling fan inside his house in Vihar village Sunday after his release.

His father alleged that his son was upset over being beaten by the police. The youth was picked up Jan 13 on a theft complaint filed by an eatery owner Suresh Fauji.

The victim’s father also claimed that the police released his son only after taking a bribe.

“It appears to be a case of illegal detention. The three policemen, including the in-charge of a police outpost, have been suspended with immediate effect. An inquiry has also been initiated against them,” Superintendent of Police Ashutosh Kumar told reporters in the district (earlier known as Kanpur Dehat), some 150 km from Lucknow.

“Further action will be taken against the policemen on completion of the enquiry,” he added.
