LUCKNOW - Hundreds of lawyers here Monday took to the streets, targeted vehicles and pelted stones at police in their protest over the killing of a colleague, officials said.

Demanding an enquiry into the murder of their colleague Gauri Shankar Mishra, lawyers of the district and sessions courts staged demonstrations in Qaiserbagh area.

The situation was brought under control only after senior officials of police and district administration reached the spot and assured the lawyers of an impartial enquiry into the murder.

“Adequate security has been deployed in the area in the wake of the lawyers’ protest,” superintendent of police (West) B.P. Ashok told reporters here.

According to police, no one was seriously injured in the incident.

Mishra, a resident of Nishatganj area, was shot dead late Saturday night and died of his multiple bullet injuries Sunday.

Police have arrested four people for the killing. Lawyers alleged the main accused in the murder - Gopal Mishras neighbour - enjoyed police patronage.

While lawyers claimed Mishra was killed over some property dispute, police now have not come up with any specific motive behind the murder.
