LUCKNOW - A teacher of a government-run primary school here has been booked for allegedly beating up a girl student causing her death, police said Tuesday.

Ram Ratan, an ad-hoc teacher with the school in Malihabad town, was booked late Monday for the death of 10-year-old Suman alias Uma, who studied in Class four.

“The victim’s family said Suman could not attend classes due to some reasons for four days. When she went to the school Saturday, she was mercilessly beaten up by Ram Ratan with a stick for not coming to school,” police inspector D.D.Singh told reporters here.

“The girl’s father, Hari Karan, a labourer, said Suman late Sunday died of her injuries,” he added.

Demanding a probe into the matter, a large number of locals of Suman’s village Phullaur, late Monday evening threatened police of intensifying their agitation if the girl’s post-mortem examination was not conducted.

Singh said: “The girl’s body has been sent for post-mortem. We have also detained the teacher. Further action will be taken on the basis of the ongoing enquiry.”

Meanwhile, official in-charge of primary education in Lucknow V.P. Singh told reporters: “We have also initiated an enquiry. On the basis of preliminary investigations, the headmaster of the school has been suspended for trying to cover up the incident.”

“Stern action will also be taken against the teacher. His services could even be terminated,” he added.
