PHNOM PENH - At least 30 people were killed late Monday in a stampede in Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh.

A DPA reporter at the scene said the victims were mainly young people who panicked while crossing a bridge during water-festival celebrations. The incident happened around 9.30 p.m. local time (0230 GMT).

The bridge has been cleared of bodies and emergency service crews have taken the injured to hospitals. However, several people jumped off the bridge to avoid the crush, meaning search crews have to search the river for possible additional victims.

The water festival is an annual celebration of the end of the monsoon season.
