LUCKNOW - At least 10 labourers were critically injured when a major portion of the ceiling of an under-construction government medical college collapsed in Uttar Pradeshs Banda district Monday, an official said.

The ceiling of the building along the Naraini road came crashing down Monday afternoon while the labourers were resting after lunch.

Though theres no casualty, it could have been a major mishap if the ceiling had collapsed while the labourers were carrying out construction activities,” acting District Magistrate H.M. Mishra told reporters in Banda, some 200 km from Lucknow.

Rescue operations have been completed. Theres no one buried under the debris. All the injured are being treated at a government hospital,” he added.

The state run Uttar Pradesh Rajkiya Nirman Nigam (UPRNN) is constructing the medical college.

According to district authorities, strict action has been recommended against the engineers and others involved in the project.

We are yet to ascertain the exact reason behind the incident. Whether the construction material was sub-standard or not will be established only after an enquiry,” Mishra said.
