19 die, 14 injured in Uttar Pradesh bus accident (Second Lead)

LUCKNOW - As many as 19 people, including 11 children and four women, were killed and 14 critically injured when the bus carrying them fell into a river in Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr district Monday, police said.

“The accident took place along the bridge of the Choiya river in Dibai town. The bus fell into the river from a height of around 25 feet, killing 14 people on the spot,” Deputy Superintendent of Police J.R. Joshi told IANS on phone from Bulandshahr, some 400 km from here.

“Later, five people died in hospital, taking the toll to 19. The condition of 14 people, undergoing treatment in a hospital, is stated to be serious,” he added.

Police are yet to ascertain how the accident took place.

“Till now we have only come to know that the driver lost control of the bus after which it fell into the river. An enquiry to ascertain the cause behind the accident is on,” police inspector R.K. Singh told reporters in Bulandshar.

The passengers were labourers heading to Badaun district from Ghaziabad to vote in the panchayat elections, whose first phase concluded Monday.
