Bridegroom among 17 killed in Andhra road accident

HYDERABAD - At least 17 members of a marriage party, including the bridegroom, were killed in a road accident in Andhra Pradesh’s Warangal district Tuesday, police said.

Around 40 people were injured when a speeding truck hit two tractors carrying the marriage party. The accident took place near Beerishettigudem in Warangal, about 250 km from here.

The villagers, hailing from Mahabubabad block, were returning home after the marriage. The bridegroom, B. Nageswar, was among those dead while bride Sunita escaped with injuries. The injured were admitted to Mahabubabad Hospital.

Last month, 35 members of a marriage party were killed in Adilabad district.

In another accident in Kadapa district Tuesday, two people were killed and four were injured when a truck hit a car.

Andhra Pradesh tops in road fatalities in the country. According to a recent report by the ministry of road, transport and highways, 13,812 people were killed in road accidents in the state during 2008.
