Girl commits suicide in Punjab police station

AMRITSAR - A teenaged girl, arrested for theft, Saturday committed suicide inside a police station in this Punjab district, police said.

According to police, Sarabjit Kaur, 17, committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan using her scarf in the Gate Hakima police station in Amritsar, around 250 km from state capital Chandigarh.

“The deceased was accused of stealing gold worth Rs.1 lakh and was on police remand for the last two days. She was arrested, a few days back, along with her mother Jatinder Kaur,” said Assistant Superintendent of Police Dhanpreet Kaur here Saturday.

“An inquiry has been ordered into this matter. This is gross negligence on part of the officials who were deployed in the police station at the time of suicide. Strict action will be taken against the culprit policemen,” said Kaur.
