Tropical Depression Hermine was expected to continue producing significant rainfall as it lifted northward into southern Kansas on Thursday.
Scattered, light to moderate showers, locally heavy rainfall and thunderstorms were expected to affect the Central and Southern Plains and the Ozarks. Prolonged periods of rainfall would lead to more flood and flash-flood watches and warnings throughout the day.
Meanwhile, scattered showers would continue in portions of the Northeast and northern New England as low pressure over the region lifted into southeastern Canada. As the storm progressed, an associated cold front would push across the Mid-Atlantic coast, allowing drier, calmer and much cooler weather to develop across the Mid-Atlantic. The tail of this front would extend through the Southeast and combine with the remnants of Hermine in Kansas.
In the West, disturbances pushing across the Intermountain West would reach into the Northern High Plains on Thursday. The system would combine with Gulf moisture to produce scattered showers and thunderstorms. Storms in the Northern High Plains may turn severe with hail, gusty winds and possible tornadoes. Farther west, a weak ridge of high pressure would begin to build into the Coast, providing a gradual warming trend across the Pacific Northwest and northern California. To the south, low pressure would keep southern California under cool temperatures.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a low of 32 degrees at Chemult, Ore., to a high of 105 degrees at Bullhead City, Ariz.
